Tackling Up
An angler spends a great deal of money every year on tackle. The tackle industry
itself is really big business. It has been estimated that, with the cost of tackle,
bait, clothing, travelling and refreshment, the cost of each fish to the average
angler works out at about £7.35. It is obvious, therefore, that the angler
must choose his tackle carefully if he is to get the maximum return for his outlay.
In this chapter we deal with the choice, purpose and method of use of the basic
tackle and equipment. The angler who reads it carefully, absorbs all the information
and applies it to the purchase and use of his gear, should be able within a few
weeks to cut down the average cost of each fish to £7.25.
The Rod
Choose a rod which suits you, which matches your personality and physique. But remember
that there are limits to the extent to which personality and physique can be applied
to a rod. One angler was ejected recently from a tackle shop after asking for a
pot-bellied, shortsighted rod with a raging thirst.
Test the rod in the shop and test it with a reel fitted. Asking the tackle dealer
for a reel might seem to be putting him to a lot of trouble, but most of them will
reply to the request with a cheery 'Get out!'
